Since 2001, we have worked to restore Town Brook to its historical state, allowing for unobstructed fish passage to 269-acres of spawning habitat in Billington Sea.

The Department of Energy and Environment is comprised of dedicated and motivated scientists and professionals who are wholly committed to bettering the natural resources of Plymouth. Since the Department’s creation, large-scale environmentally beneficial projects have transformed once degraded systems in Plymouth into thriving, diverse, and functional ecosystems. Projects have included dam removals, river restorations, wetland restorations, coastal resiliency projects, upland restorations, derelict building removals, land acquisitions, and many small-scale annual projects intended to manage habitats and maintain ecosystem health.

Day-to-day work for the Department includes routine property management (walking trail and amenity maintenance, invasive species removal, etc.), grant writing, permit applications, scientific research and data collection, biological monitoring, and project management. Drop us a line if you’re interested in our work, we’d love to hear from you!

Our Mission

The Department of Energy and Environment’s mission is to protect, restore and enhance the Town of Plymouth’s environment and natural resources for current and future generations and to do so using creative approaches and solutions based on science and collaboration. Furthermore, we aim to utilize restored natural systems, energy efficiency programs, alternative energy sources, and green infrastructure to mitigate the effects of climate change on our community and the world.

“Originally, our disruption of their lives was through ignorance, but we no longer have that excuse. For the sake of our fish, and our rivers, and ourselves, it’s time to help the fish swim free”.
